JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

It is an honor and a pleasure to be able to serve as judge for the Arts Council of Moore County 2004 Fine Arts Festival exhibition. I wish to thank Chris Dunn, his staff and all of the volunteers for their efforts in putting this show together. Their work and mine wouldn't be possible without the large range of submissions by all of the artists who are represented here.

Looking over the entries, there were some clear standouts by artists who are both competent in their technique and creative in their endeavor. The Best in Show work by Elizabeth Allen is a fine example. This small yet powerful portrait depicts a difficult pose of a young woman resting her head on her arm on a table. The mood is somber, the paint application superb, complete with subtle reflections. The work is sophisticated yet looks effortless.

From my desk some two hours away, there were many other wonderful works that continue to cast a memory for me. I wish to thank all of the artists who entered and insist that you continue to challenge yourself with your work. It is important as well to keep looking at works by other artists and digest what they have to offer. Thank goodness that the journey we know as art continues to unfold over the course of one's lifetime.
