JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

It is always a pleasure to judge an open arts competition that includes awards in so many categories. The Arts Council of Moore County has, as always, structured a professional exhibit and has always worked hard in the "behind the scenes" preparation so that each aspect of the exhibition works smoothly. I thank the staff for this effort.

The artists are to be commended for creating artwork in a world that offers such a challenging environment. In a judged competition not all of the artists can receive awards. I chose the awards based on art that, in my opinion, made an impact on me as the judge. Craftsmanship must always be the first consideration, and this includes the total art piece including the framing. The art must also be exploring new concepts, or seeking new truths. It is this exploration that distinguishes a "color and design" problem from "high art."

It has been a pleasure to be part of this exhibition and I wish each artist success in their future endeavors.
